What is a Wholecloth Quilt?

What is a Wholecloth Quilt?

A wholecloth quilt is made up of three solid layers of fabric. The quilt top, the batting (middle layer) and the backing. Usually, a quilt top is made up of a bunch of pieces sewn together in a pattern, but a wholecloth quilt just features ONE piece of fabric.

Why do I love wholecloth quilts??

  1. Fabric. Sometimes you find a fabric that you FALL IN LOVE WITH…. You have no desire to cut it up because you love the look of it in its entirety. The perfect solution is to keep it as one piece and simply quilt it!Large scale prints lend themselves well to wholecloth quilts.
  2. Modern. If you are looking for something understated to throw over the back of a chair or couch, or you just want it to blend in with your decor, a wholecloth quilt is an excellent choice. Choosing a fabric that compliments your space is much easier to do when you just have to find that ONE print that vibes with you. (There’s a lot less decision making).
  3. Quilting. Wholecloth quilts allow you to notice the quilting more- so the design stands out. This gives you a more modern look if that’s what you like.
  4. Size. They make excellent lap quilts. Typically they are one yard cuts or more, which is a great size for covering up your legs if you keep your house really cool like I do;)
  5. Cost. The cost of making a wholecloth quilt is much less than a pieced quilt because there is no labour in creating the quilt top. All that has to be done is the quilting and binding.
