The Old Soul Quilt

This quilt is a tribute to those rare souls who carry the weight of time in their hearts—those who’ve always felt a little out of place in the modern world. To those who understand that beauty lies in the simplest of things, in the quiet moments, and understand the true essence of things. With three distinct layout options, this quilt lets you weave your own story, tailor-made to fit the scrappy treasures you’ve gathered along your quilting journey.

This quilt features 4 sizes: Baby (45 1/2" x 45 1/2"), Lap (60 1/2" x 60 1/2"), Large Throw (75 1/2" x 75 1/2") & Queen (90 1/2" x 90 1/2") with instructions for the framed version (as above) and the unframed version (below).

The FRAMED Version

In this version, each Old Soul block is framed mix-and-match style with the stars embedded in each corner. This option works best if you have a fat quarter or half yard bundle you love... or just a bunch of left-over scraps from your last project.

The scrappiness really adds to the "old soul vibe" of the design.

This quilt has a bunny soft sherpa backing with a leafy quilted texture to compliment the fall aesthetic of Fancy That Design House's Woodland  & Wildflowers collection (Moda Fabrics). Quilt Pantograph by Urban Elementz: Abundance.

The Unframed Version

This version swaps out each block's border print for more background fabric. It gives the quilt a lighter, airy feel. By adding this negative space, the hearts and stars are more pronounced for a modern take on the same design.

In this version, I used Cayla Naylor's brand new collection: Buds and Butterflies (Riley Blake Designs). This collection captures the essence of a blooming garden. With soft yet lively colours, floral patterns and whimsical butterflies, these prints bring a fresh, spring-inspired vibe!

I'm a big fan of the fresh sprig of green in this collection.

Step 1:

The Old Soul Block starts with a CBQ staple: the HEART! I love the size of these hearts because they allow each coordinating print to be showcased.

Step 2:

Following the pattern, you will sew a matching square to each end of your border strips, which will form the points of the off-set stars.

Step 3:

In the final step, add your 2 1/2" squares to each corner to complete the block. Now you get to have fun mixing and matching different prints for each Old Soul block.

It is so satisfying to put it all together. I just love the colours!!

For a more uniform look, keep the stars the same in each block as seen above.

I just HAD to use the Butterfly Ballet pantograph by Urban Elementz. Love how the quilting echoes the fabric. Who doesn't love a theme??

For the backing, I've used a Luxe Cuddle Hide minky in Rosewater (my favourite colour). I like the way the butterflies pop out, adding another whimsical element to this heirloom.

The Low Volume Version

And now for the last version! This is a great way to use up those low volume prints for an even scrappier look.

Pantograph: Cabbage Rose by Urban Elementz

For a more muted look, using low volume prints as your background fabric will give the quilt a nostalgic vibe.

The low volume version features a 3 mm pile solid minky cuddle backing in sand. This adds a nice soft weight to the quilt without the bulk. After the first wash, this will crinkle up like a dream and look antique-ish!
