The "Becoming" Quilt

Meet "Becoming" – The Ultimate Scrap-Busting Quilt Pattern

Are you ready for a true stash saver? Whether you're drowning in scraps or have a fat quarter bundle you've been "saving for the perfect project," the Becoming Quilt is here to help you dive into your fabric stash with purpose and joy.

This pattern is beginner-friendly and comes in four versatile sizes: Baby, Throw, Twin, and Queen. You’ll also get two background options: go with a single background for a more cohesive look, or choose two for added contrast and movement. Either way, Becoming makes a bold, nostalgic statement with rings of hearts that cascade from floral centers. To see the Two-Background options, click here.

Let’s Talk About the One-Background Option

If you're sitting on a fat quarter bundle of (24) prints you've been waiting to use, this is your moment. The one-background version of Becoming is the perfect stage to let those prints shine. This sample version shows just how vibrant and varied your quilt can be when you let all the fabrics harmonize through the design.

(I’ll admit it—when I fall in love with a fabric collection, I tend to “save” the bundle for something special. Becoming is that special something.)

The Design

Each block in the Becoming quilt measures 24 ½" square and features 12 heart units, arranged to create striking rings, forming floral centers. As the blocks come together, an interconnected design emerges, giving the whole quilt a sense of movement.

"Be patient when becoming someone you haven't been before." - Tanya Markul

Whether you're working with cherished scraps or that long-awaited bundle, Becoming is the kind of pattern that feels both timeless and fresh—inviting you to reflect, create, and stitch something that feels truly you.

Make a Block with Me

In this version, I used the Honey Locust Collection by Amber Johnson for Riley Blake Designs—and I have to say, these prints were made for a scrappy quilt like Becoming. The soft florals, warm tones, and thoughtful details blend together beautifully.

You will start by making your Heart Sets. These are the Heart Tops:

These are the Heart Bottoms:

I like to chain piece for maximum efficiency.

A quick tip: I recommend choosing a non-directional background fabric, since the blocks in Becoming are rotated in different directions to create the final layout. A non-directional print will keep things looking seamless, no matter how the blocks are turned. It’s a small detail that makes a big difference in the finished quilt!

For the background, I used the Linen Daisies print from the Honey Locust collection—a directional print that provides a soft textured backdrop to showcase the ringed heart design. While I absolutely love the look it brings to this version, if I were to make it again, I’d likely opt for a non-directional low-volume print. It would still offer subtle interest, but without the added challenge of aligning the print as the blocks rotate in the layout. It’s a small tweak that could make the piecing process just a bit smoother!

All seams must be pressed open.

Each Corner Unit features (2) Heart Sets and (3) Background squares.

It's fun to mix and match!

Binding

For the binding, I used a coordinating Riley Blake Designs Basic—because let’s be honest, I can’t resist a good stripy binding! This one is the Charcoal 1/8" Stripe on Ivory. Stripes always seem to tie everything together in the most charming way, don’t they?

Quilting

The pantograph I chose is Alpine Grande by Urban Elementz, and it couldn’t be a more perfect fit. The delicate, storybook-style florals add a layer of dreamy texture that offsets the bold structure of the quilt blocks.
